The Embassy of Belgium in Jakarta is closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East and its impact on air connectivity between Indonesia and Europe. The recent events are causing significant disruptions to flight operations. It is not possible to predict the exact duration of these disruptions.
Travel Recommendations
The Embassy invites Belgians in Indonesia, in particular those transiting through the Middle East, to:
- Regularly check the status of their flight via the airlines' official website or their formal communication channels;
- Contact their airline before going to the airport, to confirm whether their itinerary is maintained or adapted.
Alternative routes currently remain available from several international carriers, including: Turkish Airlines, Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines.
Travellers should be prepared for possible delays, re-routing or cancellations over the next few days while the situation evolves.
In addition, passengers are advised to contact their travel agency, airline or insurance company for tailored advice and re-routing solutions.
It should be noted that the Embassy is not able to cover the costs related to the purchase of new tickets, nor those related to an extended stay or accommodation costs.
Registration on Travellers Online
The Embassy strongly recommends that Belgian travellers in Indonesia register on the Travellers Online platform. This registration makes it possible to locate Belgian citizens in case of emergency, and to have the contact details of travellers for any urgent communication.
Provisions on visa and overstays
The current flight disruptions can lead to unintentional overstay situations. Travellers with an expired or close to expired visa due to flight cancellations or prolonged delays, are requested to report to the nearest immigration office with a letter or written proof of flight cancellation from the airline or airport authority.
The Directorate General of Immigration has put in place several exceptional measures in response to the situation, including:
- Granting of a 30-day emergency residence permit, renewable if necessary;
- Exemption from the overstay fine (rate: 0 IDR) for cases directly related to the current flight disruptions
